This time of year is easily one of the busiest and stressful few months of the year. We’re working, studying, taking care of our families, planning for the holidays – it’s crazy! All of the running and the stressing can take a toll on our immune systems, which makes us more susceptible to fall victim to the less fun parts of the year: cold and flu season.
Don’t forget to use your insurance benefits up and schedule your dental check-up before the year ends!
But did you know that your oral health can play a huge part in healing from bacterial and viral infections? When you fall victim, here are a few things you can do to take care of your smile that your immune system will thank you for.
- Your mom always told you to do drink a lot of fluids when you’re sick – and for good reason! Your saliva plays a huge part in keeping the bacteria in your mouth in check. Ensuring that your body is receiving plenty of water can keep everything else in balance, helping you get better faster.
- Brush your teeth thoroughly, twice a day. Keeping harmful bacteria at bay with proper brushing technique will help the rest of your body. Make sure you’re brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing regularly.
- Eat your fruits and vegetables! Not only are they full of nutrients that you’ll need during cold and flu season, but they are great for keeping your mouth clean. Foods like apples, broccoli, and carrots can aid in scrubbing your teeth a little extra to keep plaque under control.
- While you’re at it, make sure to toss your toothbrush once your symptoms subside. Though your toothbrush does a lot of cleaning, it is very possible that it is still carrying the bacteria that caused you problems in the first place. Replace it as soon as you can and start fresh!
Continue to practice great dental hygiene once you’re feeling better. A healthy mouth makes for a healthy body, and let’s be honest – you don’t have time to be sick!
